Pros and cons of SkySafari 5 Pro app for iPhone and iPad

SkySafari 5 Pro app good for

I find this upgrade to be a neat step forward. For instance Tonight’s Best has been improved and conveniently doubled by a new feature Tonight At A Glance which concentrates on the planets and the major satellites (ISS, HST…) to be seen. It is now possible to adjust the eye piece FOV if a Barlow or a Focal Reducer is used. I personnally find the display colors more pleasant (e.g. constellations). However if importing the Settings from SkySafari 4 is possible, it sadly does not apply to the Equipment and the Locations.
This is really a great app, very easy to master. Once youve aligned your telescope, then real fun begins: just tap on an object displayed on your iPad screen, and here you go ! Your telescope will automatically slew to the object which will be right here in your eyepiece and youll have a huge amount of info to read on your iPad. The price is also very attractive compared to other "pro" softwares which are not so user-friendly. I wish that the desktop version will be also upgraded soon.
Very nice application. Notifications are very appreciable. Since version 3 Sky Safari pro updates are more enhanced. Very good application for astronomers.
This is the best ever app for astronomy: complete, easy to use, intuitive, great interface, informative. The pro version adds telescope control that works flawlessly. Very few things have a very high value-to-price in my opinion. This app is truly the best app ever seen in any area of my interests. It could cost many times more and be still a good purchase! I cant say enough how great this app is!
Nothing better than this. It is showing everything I need. Thomas
Comparing SkySafari Pro 4 to Pro 5, there are improvements in the settings. More sounds (atmosphere and chimes?) have been added long with more choices for your horizon. The Search interface has been modernized and is now a narrow column on the left side of the screen instead of taking up the entire screen. The Time tool has been reworked into a smaller bar, but is a little more awkward to use. Two more tools have been added to the tool bar; Tonight (At a Glance) and Share. The Tonight At A Glance opens a narrow column on the right side of the screen providing a summary of what is happening in the sky. It shows information for the Sun, Moon, planets and selected satellites for the evening. As I said, a great app, but there is a small but annoying glitch when orbiting planets. Pro 4 allows you to zoom out to the limits of the largest orbit for any given planets moons. Pro 5 does not. Jupiter for example will not zoom out far enough to even to include Ios full orbit let alone the full compliment of Jupiter moons. This goes for all planets. I hope that this will be fixed in the next update. Is it worth it? In spite of this minor but annoying glitch - absolute, specially at the half-off sale price.

Some bad moments

Keeps closing...have to delete and reload...disappointing....paid 25$ for app to control telescope only to consider going back to skysafari 4
There are no Planetary Surfaces after update. While SkySarari is one of the best astronomy apps out there, I dont believe that version 4 was $40 better than version 3, or that version 5 was $40 better than version 4. I strongly resent their upgrade strategy.
Seems the update (that took over three hours to d/l) broke the planetary images. Ruined my Mars party! Also kindly fix the night sky color ... prefer black and not indigo.
After spending hours turning off and on switches and settings in my new 12" IPad, the only conclusion I can draw is that the 12" IPad has so many new wireless features that its actually full of bugs in its software and is incompatible (wont work correctly) w/Sky Safari Pro 5, which is the only reason I bought it. Either that, or Sky Safari hasnt updated its software for the 12" IPad. And yes, my old 9" IPad runs fine with its compass right beside it so it is Apples new 12" IPad that has bugs, or Sky Safari Pro 5.
With notifications off they are still sending ads for their mac software.
The program works great on my on my iPhone, but the Apple Watch app does not update correctly. At 12:37 PM today it gave the altitude of the sun as 62° below the horizon when it should be 27° above the horizon. It should update the position every time you access the Apple Watch app. This problem occurs for all the other objects as well.
